“During a public meeting on June 11, Commissioner Karen Haggerty voted yes on a resolution to reappoint her son, Sgt. Paul Haggerty of the Lyndhurst Police Department, to another two-year term as the deputy fire commissioner, for a $5,151 annual stipend.”

In addition to his part-time job awarded by his mother, Commissioner Karen Haggerty, Paul F. Haggerty was also recently promoted by Mayor Bobby Giangeruso to the position of Lyndhurst Police Department Sergeant.

“Karen Haggerty on Tuesday acknowledged that her vote was an oversight and said no one advised her on whether to recuse herself from the vote.”

“Haggerty did not want to comment further on the record and asked that Township Attorney Carmine Alampi speak on her behalf.”

Haggerty would not speak for herself, referring all press questions to out-of-town lawyer Carmine Alampi, who was hired by Haggerty as Lyndhurst Township Attorney in 2017.

“Alampi did not respond to multiple inquiries.”

“Walter Luers, an attorney who specializes in public records and government transparency, said that “under state ethics rules, she was required to recuse herself.”

“The law is clear on the matter and Paul Haggerty’s financial benefit is not the issue, Luers said. Karen Haggerty would have been conflicted on the vote even if her son’s position was unpaid, he said.”

All in the Giangeruso, DiMaggio, Haggerty, Jarvis and Montillo Families…
